Earlier this year, Audi was the first automaker allowed to to operate an automated vehicle in the state of New York. The company exhibited Audi Highway Pilot technology, which offers Society of Automobile Engineers Level 3 automation, in Albany for a crowd of legislators, their staffers and assorted media.
Audi's vehicle route was reviewed and pre-approved by the New York State Police, who were also required to oversee the demonstration. The vehicle is capable of autonomous driving at posted highway speeds under very specific circumstances, with two trained engineers riding in the vehicle to monitor the system and guarantee safe operation.
Scott Keogh, president of Audi of America, stated in a press release, “Audi, with the partnership of forward-thinking states like New York, are at the forefront of defining the future of transportation. That kind of innovation only happens with industry and government working hand-in-hand toward a shared goal of safer roads.”
