Horsepower is a familiar term to most people, and is commonly used throughout any industry where engines are used to provide power. However, most people, including car aficionados, don’t know the precise meaning of horsepower or how it first originated.
Eighteenth-century designer James Watt first coined the term horsepower because he wanted to impress his customers with how powerful his engines were. As the story goes, by watching ponies pulling loads of coal at a local mine, Watt estimated the average pony could pull 22 pounds of weight for one minute. Watt increased that number by one-third, reasoning that a horse could do one-third more work than a pony, and the term “horsepower” was born.
