Understanding the Meaning of Oil Viscosity

If you have ever had one of our Audi service technicians in Pensacola replace your motor oil, you may have wondered what those letters and numbers on the motor oil bottle mean. They represent the level of viscosity, or how much the motor oil can resist flow.

A low viscosity means the oil is thinner, so it will still flow nicely when temperatures are cold. High viscosity is necessary under hot conditions, meaning the oil has the capacity to flow when thin but not too thin to continue to protect and lubricate the engine parts.

Most vehicles work best using a multi-grade motor oil such as 10W-30, with a 10 viscosity under cold conditions, and a 30 viscosity to perform well under heat. Check your vehicle's manufacturer recommendations or ask your Audi Pensacola service technicians to recommend the best viscosity in motor oil to keep your engine running nice and smooth.
